Birthday Weekend

This week I got older. Officially. To celebrate being older, I decided to spend a long weekend at home with my folks, making them feel old too :)

It was such a great weekend - so fun, I barely had time to think about how old I've gotten. . .

We enjoyed a lobster dinner, in true New England Style. . .

Followed by cake and singing. . .

Got plenty of rest. . .

Saw the Sox beat the Yanks at Fenway. . .

Found a beautiful second hand guitar for Drew's early birthday, with nylon strings - just what he wanted. . .

And drove for about 9 hours to get back to Philly. . .

. . . It was worth every minute. I am a lucky lady to have such a loving and supportive family.

Oh - and Drew bought Hunger Games.

While in Oregon last week, I revisited the Tillamook and Evergreen Aviation Museums. This time I was kind of obsessed with the landing gear. I love the different mechanisms and how integrated the gear is into the body or wings of the plane. I guess I never thought about it as a design challenge. . . but I guess it is. Sort of like headlights on cars. Ever look at them? Somebody put a lot of work into the interior of your headlights. They're like dioramas in a way, they would have made a great space analysis project. Tangent. . . anyway, these planes are totally transformers.

Okay, so driving to CVS the other day I saw this guy carrying a bag across 4 lanes of traffic - also on his way to CVS. While I was waiting in line, he said something to a woman about being in line, then pushed his shopping cart over to the fridge and grabbed 3 bottles of apple juice. . I was too distracted by his bag which was actually full of his own urine to really understand what was going on. I immediately thought - what a great potat. . . but now I'm thinking maybe I just bought my ticket to hell.

New city, new rules. I have such anxiety about recycling in Philly. I drive Drew crazy because I will only put the bin out when I feel like it's not too early, because for some reason I don't want to be the only person with a bin outside. . . but also not too late because I don't want to miss the truck and have to live with a stinky bin for another week. This morning our bin was the only one from our building on the curb (freaks me out) AND it was empty - BUT our cardboard was still there. . . our neighbors' bins down the block were still full. . . Who took our stuff? Why didn't they take the neighbors? Why didn't they take our cardboard? This is too much for me to handle. *crazies*

Yesterday was one of those days where the first words out of your mouth are "oh shit" when you wake up at 903am because apparently you hit dismiss rather than snooze at 630am. This Friday I will be in Troy, NY at The Arts Center of the Capital Region celebrating my two best boys, Andrew Degraff and Owen Sherwood. They've been working hard these past few months painting, drawing, and goofing off just enough to pull together an impressive two man art show. Keep Albany Boring wrote up some buzz on the show - I'm so proud of these guys. It's been really fun watching them pull it together, they've come a long way from Pratt dorm room homework jams. . . or have they?

My life has recently turned upside down and then almost right side up again. After 14 years living in and love/hating New York City, I have moved myself and Drew to the city of brotherly love to start a new and a-maazing job. I have been very busy with said job and moving, and so yes, we have no potatoes lately. In lieu of a drawing, tonight I give you this memo I found in my phone and have no idea where it came from:
